Joy BaileyI am Joy Bailey, program coordinator for the Geoscience Distance Learning Programs at Mississippi State University.  Since 1995 I have served as the program coordinator for these programs.  When the first program began in 1989, approximately 30 students were enrolled.  Today, over 600 students are currently enrolled in Geoscience distance learning courses.

The Geoscience Distance Learning Programs include three distinct programs.  The Broadcast Meteorology Program is an undergraduate program that leads to a Bachelor of Science in Geosciences.  This program was designed for television weathercasters needing to increase their knowledge of the science of meteorology.

The Operational Meteorology Program is also an undergraduate program that leads to a Bachelor of Science in Geosciences.  However, this program was designed and is limited to military personnel who wish to obtain their science degree for promotions within the military.

The Teachers in Geosciences Program is a master’s level program that leads to a Master of Science in Geosciences.  This program was designed for K-12 teachers who need to improve their knowledge of all aspects of the earth sciences.

As program coordinator, I serve as the liaison between the department and the distance learning student.  My objective is to provide the department and the student with quality assistance.  This includes, but is not limited to, marketing the programs, setting up courses with the registrar’s office, assisting students with admission and registration, sending course materials each semester to enrolled students, and serving as the contact person for student questions or concerns.

I would like to remind you that as coordinator, I not only handle your credit programs, but also other endeavors.  MSU offers Independent Study courses to students for college and high school credit.  An Independent Study course runs for one year rather than on a semester basis.  As the instructor of an independent study course, you would receive monetary benefits for developing a course and also receive monetary benefits for each student who enrolls and completes your course.   (more info.. link to independent study)

In addition to Independent Study courses, I would also be available to assist you with any non-credit courses, workshops, seminars, etc you would be interested in creating.  One non-credit event that I currently assist the Department of Geoscience with is the annual Broadcast Meteorology Workshop.  I handle the student registration, coordinate the hotel rooms with the designated hotel, collect any registration fees from the students, and process Broadcast Meteorology Certificates for those who complete the program and workshop. ( more info.. link to non-credit?)

If you have any ideas or questions about new courses, workshops, or seminars, please contact me and I will assist you in every way possible to establish the course and/or event and make it successful.
