Mississippi State University sponsorship is defined as the sanctioning of distance learning courses, certifications, and programs offered through AOCE as an official function of the institution. AOCE will be designated as the sole provider to coordinate all distance courses, certifications, and programs that support the institution’s mission and are offered to the institution’s non-traditional, distance learners (those students not engaged in main campus functions). By granting sponsorship, Mississippi State University officially sanctions use of institutional resources to support its operations, such as university space, personnel, equipment, telephone, computer services and support, and additional resources as requested and approved by the Office of Academic Affairs, excluding E&G funds.

Mississippi State University sponsorship carries with it authority of the institution. Such authority provides the protection and support of the institution and the state. Mississippi State University sponsorship accrues to all distance learning courses and programs coordinated through AOCE.

Mississippi State University Sponsorship

Mississippi State University sponsorship has several implications ~ Institutional resources can be legally committed to distance learning courses and programs. Without such sponsorship, faculty/staff would be required to take annual leave for all development, coordination, and instructional involvement in distance learning courses and programs offered, and institutional property and other resources could not be used.

  1. All contractual relationships between AOCE and its academic department, institutional, and organizational partners have the legal support of Mississippi State University. Without official institutional contractual approval, university or state employees who sign distance learning contracts outside of AOCE and the Office of Academic Affairs may become personally liable for meeting contractual obligations. If a contractual conflict occurs, the assets of the individual could be used to satisfy debts.
  2. Mississippi State University sponsorship connotes the ability to respond to distance learning course and program attendees with institutional resources to meet requirements such as those under the American with Disabilities Act.
